Bring in More Money by Doing the One Thing You Don't Want to
Jul 31, 2023That thing you really don’t want to do to market your business or attract clients? It might be the exact thing you need to do in order to increase your income, but don’t worry, it’s not going to feel as awful as you think.
Usually I’m writing about how you don’t have to do stuff you hate in order to have a thriving business, and that’s still true!
However, it’s so important to make sure that you double-check whatever you’re resisting to make sure it is truly misaligned with who you are and your work style before you write it off and skip it.
There are different categories of Things We Don’t Want To Do in our businesses.
- The things we are resisting, but are actually the perfect next step.
- The things we are resisting because it’s not time yet, and the right time will come.
- The things we are resisting because they really are not aligned for us and our businesses.
When you run into resistance, the secret is to find which category your resistance falls into and then you’ll be able to take the right type of action. You’ll also need to take self-pressure out of the equation.
It’s no fun to pressure yourself to do things that fall into category number three, and you’ll never complete them if you do so, because they are truly misaligned. (Or, you’ll make some progress and feel overloaded, overwhelmed, and stuck.)
It also doesn’t help to pressure yourself to do things in category number two, because it’s not the right time to do them. You’ll feel sluggish, heavy, and like you’re pushing boulders uphill.
And if you pressure yourself to do things in category number one, you’ll freak yourself out and create a lot of stress.
Here’s how you’ll know what’s in what category:
Tune into your body and truly listen to what your inner wisdom is telling you.
The reason this is so important is that things can shift from one category to another over time! Staying very aware of your inner wisdom will help you know what strategy is right on any given day.
For example, I used to resist doing Facebook Lives. I didn’t want to do them at all! For a while, this was because it wasn’t the right time. When I tuned into my body, I felt a heaviness, a tired feeling, and a draggy energy.
I’ve learned that when I have that feeling, it means it’s either not the right time or it’s simply misaligned. I table the idea and move on to other things.
With that particular example, eventually, when I checked in with myself, it did feel like the right time to do Facebook Lives. I noticed a lighter feeling, a bit of excitement, and a few nerves. This often means that it’s the right next step - I just have a little fear around it!
Your body, energy levels, and emotions will give you clues that let you know if something is still misaligned, if it’s moved into a potential “maybe” position, or if it’s now the right time to dig into this new strategy.
The only tricky part is knowing when your resistance isn’t really telling you not to do whatever you’re resisting.
I notice for myself that anything new that really stretches me brings up resistance. This doesn’t mean that it’s the wrong thing to do, however! It just means that I need to take it slow, work with the fear, and gently ease into this new challenge.
I’ve noticed that sometimes my heart-centered coach clients resist various marketing strategies and techniques, but this is simply fear that needs to be processed and released. Then, they are able to actually find out whether or not a strategy is for them.
Sometimes, the very thing we resist the most is the thing that will help our business the most! Weirdly, there are times when a high level of fear and resistance is actually inner wisdom telling you to go for it.
The key, though, is not to pressure ourselves to jump into a new strategy and over-effort, work super hard, and run ourselves into the ground.
Instead, we can go gently, kindly, and ease-fully into the new thing.
Right now, I’ve stepped into creating YouTube ads, which scares the pants off me. I have to work with the fear on a daily basis, ease my foot off the gas and slow down my scheduled YouTube ad tasks, and learn how to do them at a gentle pace.
Often, when we’re learning something new, the challenge is high, the fear is high, and it takes time to move into ease. First, it feels hard. As we’re learning, it feels confusing. The muddy middle zone between brand-new and experienced is uncomfortable.
That doesn’t mean it’s wrong.
Discomfort is a part of owning a business. It’s ok that it’s there. It doesn’t mean you’re misaligned.
It means you’re stretching and growing.
My mantra is: “I can do discomfort.”
Then I ask inner wisdom to show me how slow or fast I need to go in order to handle the fear, the resistance, and the challenge in a way that doesn’t amp up stress and make me feel really terrible.
If you can tune into your body and notice the very subtle difference between a draggy, heavy energy and a fear, zingy energy, you’ll know what is a no for today and what is a terrifying yes. 😉
This is how you can move from feeling afraid of various marketing strategies to confidently sharing your work in the world and allowing more money to flow to you.
And, any strategy can be tweaked or changed to feel more aligned with you. No one strategy is perfect for everyone.
Of course, I am here to help if you want to really dial in your business strategy so that it feels fully aligned with who you are, much less stressful, and full of way more ease.
