How to Create Content for Your Business Without Hustling
May 08, 2023Let’s talk about how to produce all the content and material you need for your business without burnout, hustling, or grinding.
It's all about learning to release the idea of needing to have a 9-5 schedule when you 'should' be working, and replacing that with focusing on what type of energy you have right now.
If you’ve followed me for any length of time, you know that I’m always putting something out there on social media or to my email list and generally creating material like the energizer bunny. But, I’m not doing so at the expense of my well-being, because that’s not something I want or can do.
In my twenties, I manifested a chronic pain syndrome from pushing myself to burnout and beyond, and it took me five years to shift out of those patterns and find a different way to be that didn’t cause my body to break down. Now, I’m acutely aware that if I push myself in my business and work hustle-style, I’m going to end up suffering in my body.
Fear drives self-pressure, self-pressure drives the hustle work mode, and that hustle work mode drives us straight into burnout.
The key to unlocking this cycle and getting out of the grind is simply not ever setting up a 9-5 workday at all. Instead, we need a creative-style workday and workweek.
The formula is, the type of energy I have right now + what needs to get done + trusting flow.
The type of energy I have right now might be tired energy, inspired energy, open-to-possibilities energy, shut-down energy - you name it! Once you know what your energy feels like right now, your first job is to address the underlying need.
Tired, shut down, or foggy “can’t-focus” energy needs attention before you can move toward your goal. Maybe you need rest, or to take a walk, or to read a book for a while. You might need to wait a day before digging into your work.
Open, inspired, or even gently relaxed energy might need you to tap into your inner wisdom for guidance first, but then it’s ready to roll and dive into action mode.
We get scared that if we really take care of our tired, shut-down, or foggy energy we’ll never get our work done.
This is exactly the opposite of what’s true.
It’s helpful to have a mantra when we’re feeling tired, shut down, or foggy to address the fear. Something like “I am going to take care of me right now and that always leads me back to productivity and creativity” can work really well.
When we take into account the content we need to write, we can look at whatever deadlines are in front of us and make a plan.
If today is a foggy day and it’s not happening, before we take our rest time, we can quickly look at the calendar and move the project to the next open space, even if it’s not as ideal as we planned.
This gives the fear a little bone to chew on - we aren’t just abandoning ship!
Then, we can relax into our rest time and really trust that flow is leading us here, anyway.
Because - when you feel tired, shut down, or foggy, inner wisdom is telling you that this isn’t the right time to create anyway.
This is the time to let your subconscious do the work behind the scenes, where all the good stuff gets created anyway. You have to let this process happen in order to pull those ideas from that subconscious well into your conscious mind where they can take shape on the page.
If the ideas aren’t there yet, they aren’t there yet. Pushing will only make us feel terrible in mind, body, and spirit.
Listening to my energy, taking action based on what it needs, and trusting that I am in the flow of creative energy is exactly how I get all of my business content written in a timely fashion without feeling burned out or awful.
I’ve created a system called the Slacker Magic System for running your business in this flow-focused style. It’s designed to keep us, heart-centered people, out of the grind while still allowing us to accomplish all the big dreams our inner over-achiever can’t wait to reach.
It’s a total win-win! You get to “slack” and cut yourself some slack while achieving your weekly goals in a way that feels like magic.
Just the other day, I had blocked out an entire day to write content and create videos. I woke up to a foggy, exhausted energy. I noticed the fear, used the mantra, and ended up taking the whole day off. My mind did say to me, you have at least six hours of work here, and you’ll never be able to get all of this done this week! I used the mantra again, to remind myself to stay in the creative flow.
The following day, I woke up with inspired energy and knocked everything out in two hours. I’m quite sure it would have taken six the day before because it felt so hard to think!
This is what I mean by magic.
